Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Android 3.1

Samsung believe their latest tablet will prove to be a massive success and we can see why. The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 now comes with the Android 3.1 operating system, providing enhanced performance on top of the superior design and build quality. This really is one of the best tablet PCs available.

At a mere 8.6mm thickness, the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is thinner than the iPad 2, the first tablet to hold that accolade, holding it in the hand really does feel impressive. The feel of the Galaxy is more solid than flimsy, and seems more robust than any of its competition. All ports and switches are easy to find and simple to use.

The display screen is 10.1 inches and comes with a 1280 x 800 resolution. Watching movies and playing games in widescreen was so crisp we were really taken aback. The picture quality feels just as good if not better than the Apple iPad 2. It feels comfortable in the hand and the weight is also light for its size so sitting back and relaxing with it felt like a dream. Sound quality is also of a high standard, dual surround sound speakers provide a great sound experience.

The Galaxy 10.1 also has 2 cameras, 2MP on the front and 3MP at the rear. This was the only slight let down as many of the new tablet PCs come with a 5MP rear camera. Picture quality was not that impressive, but then all tablets have the same issue.

Battery life on the Galaxy 10.1 is also impressive. The manufacturer advises of over 9 hours life, ample for everyday browsing and video. Although this is less than the iPad 2 it runs longer than most of the competition.

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 comes with a NVIDIA Dual Core Tegra 2 processor running at 1GHz. With 1GB memory the tablet allows a great multi-touch experience. The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is the first Honeycomb tablet to come with Android 3.1 as standard, an extremely solid operating system. This makes running multiple applications simple and web browsing has little or no lag. Performance is high and power consumption is very low. Website browsing is very smooth and reading ebooks is also of a high standard.

As far as apps go, the Android market isn’t as busy as Apple’s. However, there are a vast number of applications available on Android. The Gmail and Music Apps were both fantastic and the famous Angry Birds game ran perfectly. There is also an ability to import photos directly from your digital camera in the Galaxy. The big plus point of Android 3.1 is the new and exclusive Movies application, allowing you to rent movies and stream them through one of the best tablet PCs.

The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 Tablet really is one of the best tablet PCs around. The design is excellent and both this and the Asus Eee Transformer are the leaders in performance on the android market. The only fault we noticed is the absence of HDMI input as standard, although there are compatible cables available. Finally some stiff competition for the iPad 2 has arrived!

Blackberry Playbook

From the makers of the most secure mobile phone in the world, Blackberry, comes the most secure tablet in the world. The Blackberry Playbook is the entry tablet pc from the makers of the best business smartphone. At 7 inches, this is one of the most portable tablets available on the market and the makers, RIM, have come up with their own operating system especially for the Playbook.

The beauty of this machine is its ability to handle multiple running applications at the same time and quickly interchange between them. The excellent 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB RAM helps to make everything seem effortless. The device comes with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB worth of hard drive storage.

The finish on the Blackberry Playbook is extremely stylish, rounded edges as well as a matte back. The famous Blackberry logo is visible on the front and back and the tablet itself is extremely solid and rigid.

The weight of the Playbook is a mere 425g and the front screen at 7 inches help to make it very easy to carry and use. The front display really is exceptional, brighter than the iPad 2 and extremely clear.

There are controls for the volume and power on the thin edges as well as a connector for headphones, docking, micro HDMI and micro USB. The Playbook supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity but currently there is no ability to connect through 3G services. Blackberry have stated that this will change in the future.

The Blackberry Playbook comes with two cameras, 5MP at the back and 3MP at the front. This provides the ability to make video calls for business or pleasure. The speakers are also one of the best we’ve seen on a tablet, at the front of the device providing sound which is crisp and clear.

best tablet pc

The main thing to realise about this best tablet PC is that it isn’t really standalone. It has been designed for people with a Blackberry smartphone, the calendar and email options are only available on with it is paired with a phone via Bluetooth. Blackberry have stated that this makes their devices extra secure, perfect for business users. If the tablet is lost or stolen, all data is still on the phone preventing info being compromised. In order to get the maximum benefit from this tablet PC, you really do need a phone to go with it. Having this device alone really won’t allow you access to all the features.

In comparison to Android and Apple, the Blackberry Apps available on the market are extremely limited. Blackberry has released 3,000 apps in comparison to the hundreds of thousands you can find for an Android or Apple device, There are talks of future compatibility of Android apps with the Blackberry, however at the moment this has not materialised. One feature that the Playbook has that the iPad doesn’t is Adobe Flash. This makes video viewing and flash gaming of the same standard as your home PC.

If there was an award for the best business tablet PC then the Blackberry Playbook would win this hands down. Solid build, good performance, competitive price and extremely secure, no other tablet can compete. The tablet is compatible with MS Office applications and runs Flash as opposed to its competitors.

If you don’t have a Blackberry phone however, there is no real reason to get this device. You won’t have access to email, contacts or calendar without one. (Although there is plan to have in built facilities this year via a sw update). The number of Apps are extremely low, overall we would only recommend this if you have a Blackberry phone as well.

Motorola Xoom

Motorola have entered the tablet market with their Xoom. This tablet is built using the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS and comes packed with high spec hardware proving to be one of the best Android performing tablet PCs. Previous Android tablets were based on Google’s mobile technology, whereas 3.0 is a version specifically designed for Tablets and the difference is immediately noticeable. Motorola are forcing their hand to produce one of the best tablet PCs around.

The first thing to notice about the Motorola Xoom is the weight and size. At 10.1 inches and 0.73 kg, this is one of the largest and heaviest tablets available. This makes recording video quite difficult as your arm soon becomes tired. That said, the 1280 x 800 resolution 160DPI WXGA display is superior to the iPad 2 and makes the picture one of the most clean and crisp available. Watching videos is so much better due to the large screen, so in some ways the larger screen can be thought of as beneficial.

best tablet pc

The design of the Xoom is very sleak and stylish, a solid build with durability. However, it does get dirty extremely quickly. Fingerprints are left on both the back and the front screen, so if you do buy one we would recommend a cover or expect to be cleaning it regularly.

The Xoom comes with two cameras, a 2MP at the front for video calling and a 5MP camera at the rear for taking your own photos or video. The sound quality from the inbuilt speakers is of a decent standard without being exceptional. Having the speakers on the back of the device means that you are often turning up the volume. Motorola state that the battery life is 10 hours for video playback. Typically you can expect the Xoom’s battery to last 1 – 2 days for normal usage.

My favourite thing about the Xoom was not the aesthetics but instead the performance of this tablet. Powered by its 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor, apps and media usage becomes effortless. Couple this with the internal 1GB RAM you don’t have to suffer with hanging programs or delays at all. 32GB of internal storage also allow you to save a large amount of music and movies.

best tablet pcMany Android 3.0 apps are now available on the market. Specifically designed for Honeycomb, these applications run extremely well on the Motorola Xoom. Unfortunately, in comparison to the Apple applications available, the number quality Android apps are few and far between.

Due to the large screen, gaming on the Xoom is an excellent experience, smooth high quality graphics make it extremely fun and definitely take advantage of the capabilities of this tablet. As far as games and watching video is concerned, this really is one of the best tablet PCs available.

Overall the Xoom is an excellent device, a surefire contender for the best tablet PC crown. It comes with a larger screen than its competition and vastly superior performance than any other tablet on the market. The Honeycomb technology really outperforms anything so far from Apple. It gets let down by the lack of decent apps in comparison to Apple, but this is expected to change in future months as more and more android devices become available. The price is very similar to the iPad 2, so really the decision you have is whether you want a tablet which performs better or would you prefer a sacrifice in performance and greater access to quality applications.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101

Before 2010 the netbook market was thriving. All major manufacturers were releasing multiple versions of the small laptop. Then Apple came along with the iPad, a revolutionary tablet which provided similar capabilities of the netbook but with far superior portability.

So far none of the Android tablets have been able to compare with the iPad 2 for performance and innovation. Asus have now provided their latest effort which they hope will break the mould.

Asus were the pioneers of the netbook with the Asus Eee PC and they have taken that expertise into the tablet market with their latest offering, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101.

Taking their expertise from netbooks the Transformer includes a keyboard dock, eliminating the headache of touchscreen typing. Typing is no problem, thanks to sturdy keys similar to any netbook and allows the ability to use your tablet for document writing as well as the internet and video. The external keyboard also doubles up as a second battery, a screen protector and a stand as well as increasing connectivity. The dock comes with two additional USB 2.0 ports, an SD card reader and provides over 16 hours battery life.

The look of the tablet itself is glossy and looks somewhat like the iPad but with a bronze-brown finish. Gripping it is easy and its light weight makes it simple to carry. With a screen size of 10.1 inches, it proves to be the same as any of the other tablets available on the market. Crisp and clear, the display really is impressive.

Performance wise the Asus Eee Transformer really is one of the best tablet PCs. The processor is an NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC, it also comes with 1GB of LPDDR2 memory, a WiFi radio, and 16GB of Hard Disk space on board. This tablet PC also have two cameras, 1.2 Mega Pixel at the front and 5 Mega Pixel at the rear, making it perfect for still photography or video calls.

An innovative tablet, the Asus Eee PC Transformer TF101’s keyboard dock makes it different from the competition. This really is the best Honeycomb tablet yet. The added functionality of the keyboard dock plus all the usability of a tablet make it one of the best tablet PCs. With all of this the competitive price help to make this tablet an excellent gift option.

Apple iPad 2

With over 70,000 apps available, Apple continue to close their grip on the Tablet PC market. Their latest offering, the iPad 2 (9.7 inches and 600g) is thinner and slightly lighter than the previous version, the groundbreaking Apple iPad.

The iPad 2 comes with its own dual core processor – the A5 bringing double the performance speed and vastly superior graphics to its predecessor. This provides superior performance to any of its android rivals making it one of the best tablets pcs around. Games on this device look superb, almost up to the standard of any home console.

Apple iPad 2 – 16gb WiFi

The other noticeable changes on this upgraded version are the two cameras – One on the front and one on the back. The FaceTime app allows for video calling and the back camera provides the ability to take high resolution photos. Unfortunately the cameras could be better, the photos are grainy and video calls prove to be sluggish.

The major upgrade we were shocked by was the battery life. The Apple iPad 2 easily manages over 10 hours of usage. Another useful addition is the HDMI capability, allowing you to connect your iPad to your television with ease.

There are plans for a white version to accompany the black version and the stylish design really compliment both colours. Also available is a must have accessory, the Smart Cover which proves to a practical protector, clicking on to the side for protection as well as a sleek look. It also doubles up as a stand – perfect for watching movies and ipad 2

The original Apple iPad was the pioneer of the market and Apple iPad 2 is debatably the best all round tablet pc on the market today. Buying an Apple device comes with a premium but the abundance of apps available, this tablet pc really is in a league of it’s own.
